Sun, Sea, Sand & Spa @ Sanya 19 – 23 Oct

October 31, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Our first official family holiday to somewhere else besides our kampung, S’pore.

I had my weeklong mid-term break and we had planned for this trip months before. Original venue was Phuket, but flights were already fully booked at the beginning of September. I had heard about Sanya, being the PRC version of Hawaii, and since we are beach bums, we decided to go there instead. Sanya is just about an hour-ish flight time away from HK and we were fortunate to get a pretty good family getaway package at Kempinski Resort & Spa.

Overall, we are pleased with the resort. TJ had loads of fun running around in our deluxe ocean view room and climbing up and down the king sized bed. D was pleased with the balcony which was his cigar-smoking zone. The free internet access was a godsend although I couldn’t access Facebook, Youtube or blog cos all these sites are banned in PRC. So I had less distractions and more time to start on setting my share of the SA1 paper, which I did after TJ slept. Yup, I took work along on the family holiday. ;)

Bedtime was horrid on the first 3 nights, TJ just didn’t want to sleep until close to 11 on the first night and around 10 pm on subsequent nights. I don’t blame him, TJ is so used to sleeping in his own cot since he was born and this was the first time he had to sleep with us, in a new and exciting environment. Still we tried to keep to his routine but it was tough. I tried carrying him, rocking him, patting his butt, but TJ is so heavy now for me to do that. And when he was too tired, he would scream and cry before falling asleep with me holding him on the bed. And when I tried to peel myself away from his grasp, TJ would scream, squirm onto me and hold me even tighter. This went on a few times, and I was held hostage.

Even though we all slept on the king-sized bed, which technically meant there should be enough space for 3 of us, it was not so. Our son who slept between us would push and kick us to the edge of the bed, and when he couldn’t nudge or elbow us any further, would wake up and cry murder. There were good days and not so good ones and woken up by TJ at around 6ish one morning wasn’t something I expected on a holiday.

We didn’t get to make sandcastles on the beach but managed to take short walks there. And we only used the huge pool on two days before the topical storm poured continuously the next 2 days and nights. Still we were very fortunate to get those 2 days of good weather, ‘cos my student’s mum (saw my student and her family at the airport while waiting for our flight back to HK), that it rained for 4 days and nights over at the Ritz, where they stayed. Apparently it rained on more days over at Yalong Bay, where the fancier and better 5-star resorts were located.

The rain continued without lightening up, we were getting quite bored with staying in the room and watching Thomas and Friends. After a slow breakfast, I took TJ to Kidz Kempi, the resort’s indoor kids club and stayed there for close to 2 hours while he played with the many toys and kept himself entertained.

Food was ok, lots of selection at the daily breakfast buffet and for dinner, we just had BBQ buffet at Paulaner Brauhaus since it was included in our package. It got kinda boring after the 2nd night, so we supplemented the usual BBQ spread with ala carte stuff from the menu. D and I had the brewed beer only on the first nite and subsequently had our glasses of chardonnay instead. TJ wasn’t too keen at mealtimes, and didn’t eat as much unlike at home. Think he missed homecooked food, but on the last nite, I realised that I could order rice and stir fried veg at Paulaner Brauhaus, and fed that to TJ together with some of the BBQ chicken. He was happy to eat rice and drink the clear soup but not the angmoh Potato cream soup.

We braved the rain on 3rd day and took the free car ride to the supposed “shopping” strip at the city area. But it was raining so heavily that roads were flooded and by the time we got to the city area, we just zipped through a very boring “mall”, went to check out the supermarket and bought a few cans of coke, some imported kids cookies from Korea and Koka cup noodles (S’pore Laksa & Tom Yum flavour and imported from our kampung). Macs was next to the supermarket and we decided to ta bao our lunch. TJ had his first Fillet O Fish burger, and he almost finished the entire burger. On the way back to the hotel, we took the taxi and prayed hard during the entire ride that the flooded roads would not stall the cab and leave us stranded. The only person who was totally relaxed was TJ, who fell asleep in my arms, while D and I had this perpetual cramped look on our faces each time the driver revved the cab to keep it going, drove quite fast in the pouring rain and wet roads and talking on his mobile phone (no handsfree) at the same time.

D and I each saw two young kids, one a baby girl of maybe 7 months old at the supermarket and an older boy who was about TJ’s age at Macs. What caught our eyes was that both kids had their underpants on and no diapers. So what right?!? Except that their underpants had a huge tear, stretching from the front to the their butt crack for ease of pee and poo. We don’t think this is a fashion statement, and understand that diapers are expensive. But having the kids so exposed in that manner, with their genitals all exposed to the elements is very disturbing to us. The boy at Macs was seated on the table, and seriously, his exposed butt and all is on the table, which may not be clean to begin with and what about the next customer who comes in and eat at the same spot? So we are wondering, what is the point of wearing that tattered piece of underpants when what should be protected isn’t.

On the 2nd day, D did a 40-minute dive and he was very disappointed with the so-called good divesite, he reckons some divesites at Sai Kung are way better. In fact, he was also not impressed with the dive shop, especially since he was told that he would take over the BCD and the air tank from the previous client at the dive site, and that the air tank had only about 150 bars left. Anyway, D was so bored during the 40 min dive that he just wanna get it over and done with.

The day before we left, I treated myself to a relaxing Swedish/Thai massage and a facial at the Angsana Spa, pure bliss and relaxation for 2 hours. TJ had his afternoon nap, while D watched over him, while I took some time out for myself. Actually, 2 hours wasn’t enough but at the back of my mind, I didn’t want to stay too long away from TJ either.

The sun finally came out on the day that we were supposed to return to HK, double drats, but it was still a great family trip. The weather could have been better, but what matters is the time spent with the people who matter the most and creating memories for ourselves.

Kop Khun Kha, Railay

December 30, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Railay West BeachNever mind that the connecting domestic Thai Airway flights to and from Krabi were delayed.

Never mind that the service at some of the eateries was kinda slow (according to our standards); or that the transfer from Krabi mainland to Railay (and vice versa) via the longtail boats required wading into the sea with heavy backpacks and climbing onto the boats.

Never mind that D & I didn’t manage to have our thai massages as our itinerary was packed with climbing as many limestone crags as possible.

Never mind that D & I have cuts, scratches and mozzie bites which we had “collected” in the last 6 days… especially D who had more wounds than I, of which some were due to my horrible belaying which didn’t catch his fall as he plummeted almost 6m (I reacted by closing my eyes ?!?!) and that resulted in more gashes and rope burns (Really sorry, D, I should have been less complacent and more vigilant… when it came down to it, I “chickened out” and didn’t dare to see you fall).

Still, the last 6 days were well-spent. We had fun doing lots of climbing at various locations Print from our thai fisherman pants(Eagle Wall, Diamond Cave & Muay Thai).

D & S (our climbing mate) had definitely improved their lead climbing skills exponentially during this trip. The 2 boys can now lead 6a and 6a+ successfully and tried some 6b routes which required some rests up on the wall. Moreover they took up the multi-pitch course with our climbing guide, Soley, and did well leading & climbing 2 pitches (6a).

As for us gals, we top-roped the 6a routes that the boys led. Although I am not exactly pleased with my performance on those routes since I shouted “Tension” a few times during the climb, I am still glad that I had tried those grades.

D thinks that I am analysing far too much while I climb and that I don’t trust my feet, hence I am not being an efficient climber. I do agree with him, but I like my moves to flow into each other and look good. That’s why I tend to analyse each set of moves while climbing, wondering if this or that combination is best (perfectionist?). But D reckons I don’t have that luxury of time and energy to do that if I am climbing long distances or leading.

Sometimes, you just have to suck it in and climb,” D said.

At Muay Thai and Diamond Cave, I practised by lead-climbing skills, while putting aside the fear of falling, on simple grade 5/5+ routes. I so need to do more lead climbing at the outdoor wall at King’s Park and practise the procedure of tying the rope to the anchor.

On Christmas morning, we took a break from climbing and went for an elephant trek. To D and I, it was an okay thing to do, ‘cos we actually just wanted to climb as much as possible during this trip. After the trek and walking around Aonang, we took the longtail boat back to Railay and went to Muay Thai to do more climbing.

At Wee Climbing SchoolThe next day, which was Boxing Day, the 4 of us went on our first Deep Water Soloing (DWS), organised by Wee Climbing School. It was a good day out at sea and looking up close at these huge limestone formations in the middle of nowhere. There were some really good climbers there, and one of them, an American, climbed up the crag as we cheered him on and jumped about 20m into the waters below.

I was happy to traverse along the crag and took the giant stride out of the limestone platform about 5m above the waters. As there were insufficient climbing shoes, D and S climbed/bouldered barefooted till they couldn’t anymore as the rocks were becoming sharper.

D is sure he will not be jumping off the cliffs like that American guy but felt challenged to try out this 7a problem. He didn’t do too badly, considering this was his last climb of the day and that he managed to do at least 3 moves with little energy left, hanging upside down and almost horizontal.

There was this young chap (I thought he looks like he is from one of the East Europe countries, although S reckons he could be from one of the former USSR states) who tried the 7a problem very smoothly and made it looked so easy. Nonetheless he fell off at the last couple of holds, but I believe he would have made it if this was the first route he did at the start of the DWS.

The trip came and ended quickly, before I knew it, I am back home and chilling out the next few days before school starts again on the 3 Jan 07. Amazing how time flies, especially during the hols. :)

Krabi, here we come (22 Dec – 28 Dec 06)

December 22, 2006 · Leave a Comment

School ended at 1030 yesterday, right after the Christmas Concert. I have been waiting for this Christmas break for a long time … 10 weeks of teaching, activities and endless markings can really sap one’s energy, so this short break is something I have been looking forward to. :)

D & I have an early flight to Bangkok (0755, which means we have to be at the airport by 6am) before taking the domestic flight to Krabi. This time round, we will be travelling with another couple (our climbing buddies from NZ) and just spend the next 6 days chilling out on the beach, climb some routes on Krabi’s famed limestone crags (most likely go with Wee’s Climbing School), maybe do some sea kayaking and elephant trekking. I am looking forward to taking some time out from work and have fun at the same time. And perhaps… this trip will provide the right atmosphere and ambience for some lurve and baby-making. ;P

Anyway, we will be staying in Railay Viewpoint  the whole time, although I would have loved to live it up in some 5-star resort but then again, we will not be in the resort to enjoy the amenities most of the time. As long as the place is clean, it is O.K.

Will try to blog while I am in Krabi … till then, have a blessed Christmas.

Back From Bali

October 30, 2006 · Leave a Comment

It had been a fun-filled week in Bali and the itinerary included 2 days of diving in Nusa Penida while we were based in Sanur, followed by 2 more days of diving in Tulemben, and ended with 3 days of R & R in Kuta. Every day was sunny and clear, nice blue skies (something that is lacking in HK) and fresh air (nope, Bali isn’t hit by the haze and smog).

All diving fotos have been uploaded on Webshots (Click here)

Mola Video (Taken by D):

The 4 days of diving was just great since we saw all the things that we wanted to see, Molas, Boxer Crabs (ML and I did the YMCA song in the water when we saw the Boxer Crabs cos they look so cute and small holding the pom poms anemones), Harlequin Shrimps, countless nudibranches Ghost Pipefish. The viz wasn’t as good as those in the Similans, on average, the viz was about 10m. The best experience we had was hanging out with a Mola at about 11m for about 30 min, while it was given a thorough cleaning by the Banner Fish. The 2nd best experience was being surrounded by a huge school of Jacks and swimming with them so close to us. And the worst time of my life was when I struggled with the horrid and ever changing currents in Crystal Bay, Nusa Penida. That actually scared me and I had to stay calm while I finned furiously to get back to my fellow divers who were quite a distance before me.

Stingray Video (Taken by D)

ML and I were very near the stingrays and they were coming too close for comfort. That’s when we remembered Steve Irwin, and tried to move away quick enough without spooking them.)

It was fun hanging out and diving with D and ML (a colleague who decided to call herself “Mola” just for this trip). It will be great to do this again, but perhaps this will be my very last diving trip before we try to enlarge our family later this year.

We met up with another couple in Kuta later in the week and did the touristy things, shopping, eating, sightseeing etc. We ate lots of seafood, drank some Arak (Balinese Liquor), bought some Rip Curl apparel (not particularly cheaper than in HK or S’pore), took lots of photos, jumped into the surf at Legian Beach, pampered ourselves with some Spa treatments, and just have some down time to recharge and rejuvenate before returning to work this week.

Next trip will be a rockclimbing trip in Krabi during the Xmas hols… Life is good.

Bali, Here We Come

October 22, 2006 · 2 Comments

In another couple of hours, D & I, together with another fren, will be on our way to Bali, for 4 days of diving and another 3 more days of R & R when another couple will join us. Can’t wait for the hols, it’s been quite a while since I last travelled (returning to S’pore doesn’t count, even tho’ it’s good to see family and friends), and I am thinking of all the various spa treatments and massages that I am going to have this trip.

We will be in Bali by 3pm this afternoon, a direct flight from HK, and will spend nights in Sanur, Tulemben and finally Kuta. Dive sites include various parts in Nusa Penida (heard the waters could be cold when the thermocline comes in and currents strong… I don’t like strong currents, they scare me), Liberty Wreck and other parts in Tulemben. Nice, hope to see more Mantas and Mola Molas.

And oh, Ratty is joining us on this trip too ;)

Diving @ Pulau Dayang (28 Jul to 30 Jul)

July 31, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Finding the best possible position to have a comfortable sleep on a rackety diving boat late at night whilst on the way to Pulau Dayang is quite a challenge. We left Mersing Jetty around 12 midnight and it would be another 4 and a half hour before we reach our destination. When we finally reached Dayang, it was still quite dark and my fuzzy sleepy mind wasn’t in the best of moods.

I had asked my instructor friend if the resort is 5-star, and he retorted it could be 5-STARfish or maybe 5-Sea Urchins… anyway, it was a plain no-frills (not even blankets or towels; toilets/bathroom facilities are communal) quad-sharing bunk. I put aside my urban/Mauritius 5-star Spa resort mentality and slept the neximg_0478.jpgt 2-plus hours. It was only for 2 nights… the dive and beach had better be worth it.

In the morning, Dayang revealed itself to be a lovely place, clear turquoise waters with nice soft sand to step on and dig into (like the ones in Mauritius), food was quite good (the enciks fried some nice goreng pisang for tea). The waters were a nice 28 degrees C, and although the dive sites can’t be compared to Similans, the viz was still a good 12 to 18m.

img_0506.jpg  img_0518.jpg img_0499.jpg

I am happy to swim with my first turtle; observed the flickering colour changes on my first reef cuttlefish up close and personal; stayed a distance away from a school of juvenile Barracudas swimming in formation; held a Spanish Dancer which was so comfortable that it refused to leave my glove; tried to feed a Moray Eel with a dead fish.

We did 6 dives altogether and besides the initial problem D and I had with our loaned BCDs (we had to oral-inflate the BCD cos the hose connectors didn’t fit the ones on the BCDs), it was still a good experience. A friend of ours was there for his Open Water Training and D buddied him; whilst I was his girlfriend’s buddy, who incidentally caused me to put my DM training into practice.

We are going there again this weekend with another group of divers who are doing their Open Water and Rescue Diver trainings. D will be going as DMIT, i.e. Dive Master In Training, while I will be there as a DMIT(a), fewer responsibilities compared to D but would need to put my DM training into some use.

Here’s the video of the young turtle (pardon the jerkiness towards the end):

Diving Around Phi Phi & The Similans (2 Feb – 7 Feb 06) – Updated Entry

February 9, 2006 · 1 Comment

collage.jpgWe are back from the underwater world… it was amazing, especially the Similans. D & I saw a different view of God’s creation and I sure hope that we didn’t mess things up for the fishes, corals etc while we were there. They must be thinking, “Great, these dark-suited neoprene humans with aluminium tanks and exhaling bubbles are gone now.”
We saw the King Cruiser wreck in terrible currents and choppy seas (I lost my appetite there & was seasick), moray eels of all sizes, countless fishes (wrasse, parrotfish, puffers, triggerfish, my fav clownfish, thousands of glassfish, barracudas, blue-spotted stingrays etc), a huge (possibly 6m) manta ray and a leopard shark which I am pleased to say that I spotted it before anyone else did.

On our first 7 dives, we were taken to various sites around Phi Phi (Koh Doc Mai, Koh Bida Nai, Koh Bida Nok, King Cruiser Wreck, Shark Point, Maya Bay). I thought visibility was quite good at those sites. We did 4 dives on the 1st day, rested the night in the hotel on Phi Phi Island, and did another 3 more dives the next day before returning to Patong. All of us had an “obstacle course” experience when we were at Phi Phi. As our dive boat was berthed some distance away with a few boats between us and the pier, we had to climb on and off these boats (one of which was utterly smelly as it is used to transport trash) just to get to the pier. After that, we had to trudge for another 20 minutes along Phi Phi beachfront just to get to our hotel.

After resting in Patong for another night, we left early the next morning to begin our Liveaboard experience onboard SSD3, quite a floating hotel, luxury living on 4-storey boat. This would take us around the Similan Islands and our dive sites included Koh Bon (where one of my dreams came true with the huge Manta Ray gliding across the waters), Boulder City (lots of huge boulders and saw my first Leopard Shark there), Shark Fin Reef (sharks used to be quite common there but no longer), the beautiful East Of Eden (akin to that of an underwater Japanese garden).

I had used my sony videocam in its Ikelite housing to film most of the things we saw, while fine-tuning my buoyancy, enjoying the clear visibility and diving my first deepest depth of 34m. D was busy taking loads of photos, but had to be really careful with his battery usage as he realised to his horror, that he had left his battery charger back in S’pore.

This has been an amazing holiday. Each dive was different and made special by the fact that I was given the opportunity to be there, a guest in the underwater world.

Apparently none of us felt a tinge of guilt tucking into bbq squid, butter prawns & crayfish after diving.

Some Macau & Taipei Pics

September 19, 2005 · Leave a Comment

collage6.jpgHere are some important Macau sights (Macau Tower & St Paul’s) that I took while I was in Macau last month for the Staff R & R. Nothing much in Macau I feel, unless casino and interesting dance & show (the topless kind) are your kind of thing. Good for a day trip, although I heard there is a really solid Go-Kart circuit in Macau. Maybe next time when I m there, I will visit it and have a go whacking the circuit.

In Taipei, D & I attended his colleague’s wedding. Their wedding pic was projected all around the top of the banquet hall during the wedding presentation. luannie.jpgThe wedding was held in Taichung while our hotel was at Taipei, which was about 2 and a half hour bus ride. We took the inter-city bus service there and back to Taipei. taipeibus.jpgThe ride back was slightly expensive, given that we had nice upholstered comfy seats, which came with individual LCD screens with a good selection of Chinese and English movies (and also some Category 3 movies) and some computer games too. The seats are also massaged-enabled, just like those Osim chairs. Really cool.

Final Short Trips – Taipei & Macau

August 18, 2005 · Leave a Comment

This weekend will be quite fun, D & I are squeezing in one trip to Taipei on Fri (after staff meeting in school) and returning on Sunday afternoon. We will be there to attend his colleague’s wedding at Taichung on Sat, which is also D’s 35th B’day. Taichung is about 2-hrs away from Taipei by bus, and that is what we will be travelling on to and after the wedding dinner.

It’s my first trip to Taipei, and although it is a short one, I don’t really mind as long as I get to visit another country. Anyway the flight to Taipei from HK is just 1h and 20 min, which is worthwhile for a short trip overseas.

When we return on Sunday, I will have to pack for another 3 day 2 night stay at Hyatt Regency Macau. This will be a Staff Retreat with all my colleagues, lest you think it is a holiday with shopping, eating out and some spa sessions, not quite. The word “retreat” just means away from the actual school building in HK.

It is a camp in a way, with team building activities, planning sessions for the new academic year and hopefully we will all be well-fed. Still, I am looking forward to it, staying in a 5-star hotel and having some fun with my colleagues. But I will miss D.
